Taking the heart-shaped herb is not a peaceful, ceremonial experience for her, but a means to an end in order to protect her country and avenge her losses. This thought process is exactly what Killmonger was going through during Black Panthermeaning that even though he and Shuri haven’t really interacted, they are connected on a deeper level than they know.
Killmonger appeared to Shuri to show her the side of herself she had fought against and to prove that there are better ways to avenge her losses than to repeat her mistakes. Shuri and Killmonger were both fueled by revenge, Killmonger against the Wakandans and Shuri against Namor. Appearance of Killmonger during Black Panther: Wakanda Forever gives him the chance to confront his emotions and gives him new perspectives, finally allowing him to grieve properly while becoming the perfect hero the Wakandans need.
